Sail a yacht and admire the extraordinary underwater Croatia

Care for the natural environment means that Croatia is home to many species of marine animals. This makes the coast of this country extremely attractive to divers and nature lovers. So let’s see what marine treasures the Croatian part of the Adriatic hides.
The Adriatic Sea is known for its crystal clear waters, which allows you to admire the underwater world in all its glory, including a wide range of fauna species. Croatia has numerous marine reserves and national parks where biodiversity has been preserved, thanks to which you can commune with unspoiled nature.
Certainly not many people know, but in Croatian waters you can meet dolphins, which are under strict protection. The natural habitat of bottlenose dolphins is the western coast of the Lošinj archipelago. It has been estimated that there are 220 of these types of dolphins in the Adriatic, and it is Croatia that offers the greatest chance of meeting them. They need a constant supply of atmospheric air, so they often have to be at the water’s surface, which means that a trip on a rented yacht gives you a good chance of meeting them.
Although rare, if you are very lucky and spend time in Croatian waters, you can also come across Mediterranean seals, sea turtles, and even whales. Sperm whales have been seen near the island of Korčula, and a baleen whale has been observed in Mljet National Park. In the Adriatic, you can also find various rare species of fish, such as the bishop’s miter, from the shape of which the name of the headgear of church dignitaries comes.
Observing marine life in Croatia up close is unforgettable, and admiring such rare animals in their natural habitat is an invaluable experience – regardless of whether you are an experienced diver or a novice snorkeler. Of course, it is important for divers that you can also find fascinating geological formations under the water, such as caves, cliffs, but also shipwrecks, which both attract various species of animals and offer exciting routes for exploration.
It is worth remembering that in the Adriatic you can come across sea urchins and jellyfish, and being stung by the latter can cause breathing problems, vomiting or loss of consciousness. For this reason, before you go in search of marine fauna in Croatia, you should always familiarize yourself with the recommendations on how to behave during contact with animals.
