Caves in Croatia that you must see

Category:

Croatia is a unique country. Memorable views, beautiful beaches and a whole host of attractions await tourists. Caves are the places that are particularly worth seeing.

Tourists can visit as many as 40 caves. Which of them are considered the most beautiful? Find out below.

Top 5 Caves in Croatia

Odysseus Cave (Odisejeva špilja)

Odisejeva špilja

The Odysseus Cave is located on the island of Mljet and is one of Croatia's top attractions. According to many scholars, this cave was described by Homer in the Odyssey. In the epic, the cave is called Ogygia and is the place where Odysseus spent seven years with Calypso, a nymph.

What else should you know about the Odysseus Cave? It is a karst cave, the upper part of which has collapsed and formed a deep cavity. The cave is connected to the sea by a natural tunnel. As the Odysseus Cave is a karst cave, you should not visit it after prolonged rainfall (the rock is prone to erosion).

The cave looks beautiful and makes an incredible impression. It is certainly worth considering when planning a yacht cruise or a trip to Croatia.

Baredine Cave

Baredine Cave

Another suggestion is the Baredine Cave, which is located in the village of Nova Vas in Istria. The cave is 132 metres deep, but only approximately 60 metres are available to be explored by visitors. There are 5 chambers in the cave that are rich in beautiful dripstone forms ‒ stalactites and stalagmites. Another undoubted attraction is the underground lake, home to the olm (Proteus anguinus), a small and white-skinned amphibian. Former inhabitants believed that the olm was a descendant of dragons that lived in the cave.

You can only visit the cave with a guide. The cave has a constant temperature of 14°C.

Your visit to the cave will certainly be an unforgettable experience. If you have the opportunity to visit the Baredine Cave, do not hesitate.

Vranjača Cave

Vranjača Cave

The Vranjača Cave is situated at the foot of the central part of the Mosor Mountain. The cave is divided into two parts. The first part has been known for a long time; the second part was discovered only in 1903. The latter part was discovered by the owner of the land on which the cave is located (the man slipped through a narrow passage to rescue an injured pigeon).

The cave has several levels formed by corridors, small halls and viewpoints. The lowest level of the cave is the most exciting. It is filled with numerous stalactites, stalagmites and stalagnates.

You should also know that regardless of the temperature outside, the cave has the same temperature of approximately 15°C all year round.

Blue Cave (Modra špilja)

Modra špilja

The Blue Cave on the island of Biševo is another place worth seeing. The cave is filled with beautiful, blue water. The blue colour is due to the sand at the bottom of the cave entrance ‒ the sand reflects sunrays.

The cave is 31 m long, 17 m wide and 15 m high. The depth at the deepest point is 18 m.

Cerovac Caves (Cerovačke špilje)

Cerovačke špilje

The Cerovac Caves mean three, beautiful caves ‒ Lower, Middle and Upper, which are located in the south of the Velebit Nature Park. The total length of the cave's corridors is 4 km; only 700 m of the Lower Cave are available to tourists. Human remains, cave bear remains, and fragments of pottery have been found in these caves. This means that the caves provided shelter and were inhabited by people.

Summary

A trip to Croatia will surely be an astonishing experience. When preparing your trip itinerary or cruise itinerary, make sure you take caves into account. The most beautiful caves, which are especially worth seeing, include the Odysseus Cave, the Baredine Cave, the Vranjača Cave, the Blue Cave and the Cerovac Caves.
